Illinois Considers Four-Day School Weeks

Four-day system used in at least 17 states

The Illinois House wants to give struggling schools a chance to save money by offering classes only four days a week.

A four-day week would reduce costs such as transporting students to school.

Rep. Bill Black says his bill would require schools that drop a day of instruction to offer longer hours the other four days. That way, students would end up with the same amount of time in the classroom.

The State Board of Education would review any plan to drop a day of instruction.

More than 100 school districts in at least 17 states currently use the four-day system, and dozens more are considering doing the same, the Wall Street Journal recently reported .

The measure passed 81-21 on Monday. It now goes to the Illinois Senate.
