Illinois Plans to Celebrate 100th Anniversary of Route 66

Illinois wants to celebrate a century of people getting their kicks on Route 66.

Gov. Bruce Rauner signed legislation Tuesday creating the Illinois Route 66 Centennial Commission, which will make plans to celebrate the road's 100th anniversary in 2026.

Rauner says Illinois has "a distinct place of honor" in the history of Route 66 — also known as The Mother Road — which starts in Chicago and travels to California.

Illinois in the late 1920s was the first state to pave the entirety of its share of the route, which became famous for its neon signs and roadside attractions that prompted the song lyrics "Get your kicks on Route 66."
