Authorities have blocked off streets around some of the tallest buildings in downtown Chicago Thursday as chunks of ice fall onto roadways below, breaking windshields and sending pedestrians fleeing for cover.
The Chicago Fire Department blocked off Wacker Drive at Adams around the Willis Tower and authorities were also blocking Delaware Place near Michigan Avenue at the former John Hancock Center. Sidewalks were also blocked off at Superior and Wells due to the conditions.
Video from the scene showed large pieces of ice crashing down from the building onto the streets below.
Devon Ross was dropping off her mom at work when she said ice crashed down on her windshield, shattering it.
I started to see people on the street like looking up and they were dodging these like fist-sized pieces of snow and it looks just like snow but then it would smash and crush on the ground and it was scary but I was just pulling out and was like ‘Glad I’m not over there’ and then this huge piece just fell on the windshield,” she told NBC 5.
Authorities were seen ushering people off the sidewalks in the area, shouting at them to take cover and get out of the way.
It remained unclear how long the streets would be blocked off.
