Hypothermia Cause in Wheelchair Death

Berwyn woman also suffered heart atttack

The woman found outside in a wheelchair near her home in west suburban Berwyn Friday died from hypothermia, the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office confirmed Saturday.

Susan Kotalik, 59, of the 3400 block of Ridgeland Ave. in Berwyn, was found outside her home in a wheelchair, a spokesman for the Cook County Medical Examiner's office said Friday.

A Saturday autopsy shows Kotalik died of hypothermia, and that she also suffered a heart attack, according to the medical examiner’s office. Her death was ruled natural.

Temperatures in Berwyn were in the low 20s Friday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service.

Berwyn Fire personnel received a call at 12:40 p.m. and made a transport from 34th Street and Ridgeland Avenue to MacNeal Hospital in Berywn, according to Berwyn Fire Chief Denis O'Halloran.

Kotalik was taken to MacNeal Hospital in Berywn where she was pronounced dead at 1:10 p.m., a medical examiner's spokesman said.

Berwyn police would not comment on Kotalik's death or their response to the scene until Monday.
