Hundreds Gather at Soldier Field for Veterans Day Ceremony

Hundreds of people gathered at Chicago’s Soldier Field on Saturday to honor the nation’s veterans and to thank them for their service.

“In war, there are no unwounded soldiers,” Senator Dick Durbin said during the ceremony. “For the wounds they suffered, and the sacrifices they made, and the freedoms they secured, let’s honor the service of every American veteran on this day and every day.”

The ceremony took place in front of the famous Doughboy Statue at the iconic stadium, with all branches of the armed forces represented.

“It’s a tribute to the men and women, and their families, who fought for the ideals of not just a place called America, but for a set of ideals that bound us together,” Mayor Rahm Emanuel said.

Secretary of the Army Ryan McCarthy was the keynote speaker at the event, and he spoke of taking a moment to pause and thank those that have served.

“It’s about acknowledging those who live among us, those who have served before, and those still serving today.”

The ceremony concluded with a 21-gun salute and the laying of a wreath by the assembled dignitaries.
