A hot, humid day gave way Monday afternoon to rain and thunderstorms in the Chicago area and the rainy weather continued through Tuesday morning ahead of a dramatic temperature drop.
Rain will linger on Tuesday as temperatures fall to the low to mid-70s inland and the 60s along the lakefront. A cold front will likely keep highs in the 70s until Friday.
The chance for showers and thunderstorms remains throughout the week as well.
The cool, rainy weather comes after a night of storms in the Chicago area.
The National Weather Service reported showers and storms moving across northern Illinois just after 2 p.m. Some of the storms produced heavy downpours and wind gusts of up to 35 mph.
At about 3 p.m. the radar tracked a line of strong thunderstorms from near Plainfield to near Seneca, moving east at about 20 mph.
Wind gusts of between 50 to 55 mph were possible. Torrential rainfall during the storms could lead to flash flooding, the National Weather Service warned.
A Severe Thunderstorm Warning was also issued for Lee County just after 6 p.m.
Scattered showers and thunderstorms continued into Monday evening. Some storms brought the potential for severe weather, and certain areas were expected to see heavy rain.
Monday started out with hazy sunshine and windy, hot and humid conditions. Highs were expected to reach into the mid- to upper-80s with some areas potentially seeing 90 degrees.

The 90-degree temps would mark only the second day this year with such high temperatures. The only other day with a high of 90 degrees was June 10.
