Man Stole Cemetery Vases for Cash: Police

A Hometown man has been arrested and charged with stealing brass vases from two Elmhurst cemeteries, another in unincorporated Will County and from other unidentified cemeteries.

Jeffrey T. Burke, 35, of the 8800 block of South Main Street, was arrested Aug. 5 and was charged with felony theft of stolen property and driving with a suspended license.

Police recovered from Burke more than 400 brass vases worth an estimated value of more than $100,000. Burke took the vases to a scrap yard in exchange for cash, according to Elmhurst police.

In 2007, Burke was charged with a similar felony theft in DuPage County, according to a press release from Elmhurst Police.

He was sentenced to five years in the Illinois Department of Corrections for his crime.

Burke is currently being held at DuPage County Jail on $60,000 bond.
