Man Pulled from Collapsed Building

A man trapped when an abandoned Menards store collapsed Tuesday afternoon is en route to an area hospital.

The building, at the corner of Higgins and Barrington roads, collapsed at about 4 p.m., trapping one man.  Arlington Heights police Sgt. Greg Poulos said the collapse happened during a scheduled demolition of the store.

Crews were immediately able to make contact with the man, who was trapped in a three-foot high pocket under the collapsed roof, Poulos said.

About 45 minutes later, he emerged from a hole in the rubble, standing in a gray T-shirt and a blue helmet.

He was put on a gurney and taken to an ambulance for treatment.

"He's a very lucky guy. He should go buy a lottery ticket," Hoffman Estates fire Capt. Pat Fortunato told the Chicago Tribune.

The collapse didn't cause damage to neighboring businesses, the Daily Herald reported.
