Hit-and-Run Crash Leaves 1 Dead on Chicago's South Side

Authorities said the man's body was trapped under the car and dragged for roughly five blocks

Police are searching for a driver after a gruesome hit-and-run crash left one man dead early Tuesday on Chicago's South Side.

Authorities said the crash took place at around 3:10 a.m. in the 7900 block of South Cottage Grove Avenue in the city's Chatham neighborhood.

A 22-year-old man was walking when he was struck by a car, according to fire and police officials, who said the vehicle may have been a gray Hyundai Elantra.

The vehicle was traveling northbound on South Cottage Grove Avenue before striking the man, at which point it turned to head eastbound on 79th Street, according to police.

Authorities said the man's body was dragged for roughly five blocks, trapped underneath the car until it reached the 7900 block of South Dobson Avenue.

The man was pronounced dead on the scene, according to police. The Cook County Medical Examiner's office could not immediately confirm the fatality and further details, including the man's identity, were not available.

The suspect fled the scene in the car, authorities said. No one is in custody in connection with the incident as authorities continue to investigate.
