Beachgoers and swimmers are being warned to be vigilant on Monday as the National Weather Service has issued a Beach Hazards Statement for Cook and Lake counties.
According to forecasts, wave heights of three to five feet are expected as high winds and a low pressure system will combine to generate higher-than-average water levels near Illinois beaches on Lake Michigan.
Rip and structural currents are expected, meaning swimmers are at risk of being pulled into higher water.
The statement takes effect at 1 a.m. Monday morning, and will continue through Monday night.
Beachgoers are to follow all posted signs and closures along Lake Michigan, and can visit the city of Chicago’s website or National Weather Service website for more information about wave heights and beach closures.
