Heavy Snow, White-Out Conditions Cause Multiple Pile-Ups in NW Indiana

Police reported multiple crashes at the 13 mike marker and said the vehicles were towed at the Love's Travel Stop on Grant Street

White-out conditions in Northwest Indiana led to a pair of serious pile-up crashes in Lake County.

According to Indiana State Police, a 17-car pileup occurred near mile marker 7.2 on Interstate 80/94, and a 13-car pileup occurred near milemarker 6.2.

The 17-car pileup involved four different crashes, police said. In the 13-car accident, seven separate crashes were reported.

Minor injuries were reported in both pile-up crashes, according to police, but nobody was seriously injured in either wreck. The highway was shut down on Sunday afternoon.

Some vehicles were relocated to a truck stop on Burr Street, where crash reports were taken by police.

Traffic on the interstate has since reopened, but drivers are being urged to exercise caution in the area.

Trooper Glen Fifield warned the public to stay cautious, reduce speed and make sure headlights are on.
