1 Dead, Another Injured After Gunman Reported at Elmhurst Hospital

The incident remains under investigation

Officials confirmed "a man with a gun situation" at Elmhurst Hospital Wednesday evening prompted a brief lockdown and heavy police presence in the area.

Significant police activity was seen at the hospital located at 155 E. Brush Hill Road around 7 p.m. Wednesday, after authorities said they received a call from the hospital.

Elmhurst Hospital said there was “a man with a gun situation in the west parking lot at the hospital," Deputy Fire Chief Bill Anaszewicz said.

A woman in her 40s was taken to the emergency room with a gunshot wound, and was said to be undergoing treatment, officials said.

"Officers arrived within minutes and located a second person suffering from a gunshot wound in a vehicle in the west parking lot," Anaszewicz said. That second person was a man, believed to be in his 70s, who was also brought to the emergency room for treatment and was later pronounced dead.

Reports on social media immediately suggested there was a possible active shooter situation.

The City of Elmhurst issued a statement on their Facebook page saying, "Elmhurst Police are investigating a shooting incident that has occurred in the parking lot of Elmhurst Hospital. The victim has been removed to the emergency room for treatment and there is no longer a threat to others. There is limited access to the emergency room parking area. This incident remains under investigation."

No other details were immediately known.
