A manhunt was underway Monday after a robbery and "gun battle" at a used car dealership in south suburban Dolton left one suspect in critical condition and a police officer injured, officials said.
The incident began when officers were called to an armed robbery in progress at 519 E. Sibley Blvd., Mayor Rogers said. Two suspects took a wallet and gun from the manager, then exited the dealership where they encountered a police officer and a shootout began, he said.
Police K-9s found a hoodie and facemask while searching the area and officials said a weapon was recovered at the scene.
The officer was taken to the hospital with a minor injury, and Rogers later said he was to be "released shortly." The veteran police officer, with more than 20 years in service, was injured but not by gunfire, authorities confirmed.
The shot suspect was taken to the University of Chicago Hospital in critical condition, Rogers said.
At a news conference Monday evening, Dolton Mayor Riley Rogers said police decided to call off the manhunt, however, dozens of officers were still searching for the suspect as of 5:30 p.m.
The mayor also insisted residents they stay in their homes, and remain vigilant.

Several officers, many of them heavily armed, were seen earlier on multiple surrounding streets.
Witnesses reported hearing as many as 26 shots.
"[I've] never seen anything like this," witness Ayana Lloyd said.
Law enforcement from agencies including the Illinois State Police, the Cook County Sheriff's Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms responded to the scene.
