An iconic statue of legendary Chicago Cubs broadcaster Harry Caray was vandalized at a baseball field in western Illinois.
Little Cubs Field, located in Freeport, features numerous homages to Wrigley Field, including a marquee and ivy-covered walls. It also features a statue of Caray near first base, and vandals hit the artwork with a baseball bat, knocking off one of its arms.
According to board member Denny Garkey, it was a group of kids that allegedly damaged the statue.
“It is disappointing,” he said. “Kids do what they do but Little Cubs Field has become an icon, not just to Freeport but to the whole region.”
Another group of kids witnessed the vandalism, and reported it to authorities.
The arm from the statue was left behind, and Garkey believes it will be re-installed within the next 10 days.
“We’ll get some repairs done. A little glue, some very long screws, and he’ll be up and running again and leading the crowd in ‘Take Me Out to the Ballgame,’” he said.

Police say they have a list of suspects in the case, and say they will hold them accountable for the vandalism.
