Man Shot, Killed by Officer After Stabbing

Police say John Brown, of Hammond, stabbed his wife before threatening officers

A northwestern Indiana man was fatally shot by an officer after he had stabbed his wife and then threatened officers with two large knives, police said.

State police said Hammond officers were called to the home Sunday night for a domestic disturbance. Those officers found that 44-year-old John Brown's wife had been stabbed multiple times before fleeing to a neighbor's home for help.

Police said Brown confronted Hammond officers, one of whom shot him. Brown was pronounced dead at a hospital, while his wife was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Hammond Police Chief Brian Miller said the shooting in a neighborhood on the city's southeast side was turned over to state police for investigation because it involved one of his department's officers.
