Gurnee Teen Faces Felony Charges After Allegedly Shooting Boy in Fight Over Money

The teen allegedly shot another boy who wanted payment for a pair of shoes

A 17-year-old Gurnee teen is facing felony charges after he allegedly shot another teen during a confrontation on Sept. 5.

According to the Lake County Sheriff's Office, two teens, both 17 years of age, arrived at a residence in the 17700 block of West Horseshoe Lane to demand payment from another 17-year-old for a pair of sneakers that they had sold him.

When the pair arrived at the home, the 17-year-old resident came to the door and flashed a semi-automatic pistol during the ensuing conversation. The teen then reached for the weapon and a physical altercation took place.

During that altercation, the resident fired a shot at the two teens, striking one of them in both thighs.

The shooting victim initially tried to treat the injury on his own, but was persuaded by police to seek medical attention.

The teen who allegedly fired the shot was taken into custody, and faces felony charges of Aggravated Discharge of a Firearm and Aggravated Assault. He is being held at the Hulse Juvenile Detention Facility pending a detention hearing.

NOTE: An earlier version of this story indicated that Gurnee police, not the Lake County Sheriff's Office, was in charge of the investigation. The error has since been corrected.
