Hundreds of guns stolen from a UPS distribution center in Tennessee were discovered in a Chicago-area parking lot on Sunday, according to police, who said one of the men suspected of transporting the weapons remained at large.
Two men stole the firearms from a facility in Memphis, according to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, which was offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to the suspects' arrest and conviction.
On Sunday, Midlothian police said officers responded to a Walgreen's parking lot, located at 4800 W. 148th St., after a witness reported seeing occupants of a vehicle believed to be engaging in drug sales.
Upon arrival, the officers made contact with the two men in question and spoke to them before they suddenly fled on foot, abandoning their vehicle, Midlothian police said on Facebook.
The vehicle the men left behind contained dozens of firearms, according to police - which ATF confirmed were the weapons stolen in Memphis. It was not immediately clear how many or what kind of guns were involved.
UPS declined to comment, saying in a statement that it was informed that the "merchandise" was recovered and the company was cooperating with law enforcement.
Authorities said officers chased the suspects and set up a perimeter in the area of 149th Street and Knox Avenue, where the men were last seen, with assistance from several jurisdictions, K-9 units and a helicopter.
One of the men was taken into custody Sunday night, police said, while the second remained at large as of Tuesday.
ATF identified the man police are searching for as 24-year-old Roland Jackson of Chicago. He was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt with a red stripe, according to police.
Information about the man who was taken into custody, including his identity, was not immediately available, officials said, and charges were pending.
Anyone with information on Jackson's whereabouts was asked to call 911 or 1-800-ATF-GUNS.
