Schaefer's Mother Fails in Bid to Gain Custody of 2-Year-Old

A grandmother's eleventh-hour bid to become the guardian of the child of a Chicago woman imprisoned in Indonesia for the 2014 killing of her mother was rejected by a judge.

Cook County Circuit Judge Susan Kennedy Sullivan said Tuesday Heather Mack and Tommy Schaefer must give written consent before a decision on guardianship is made.

Two-year-old Stella Schaefer was born shortly before her parents were convicted in the 2015 killing of Mack's mother, Sheila von Wiese-Mack. The girl is scheduled to leave her parents' custody later this week.

Walker is Schaefer's mother. Attorney Michael Goldberg says Schaefer wants his mother to have guardianship.

Attorney Vanessa Favia says Mack has made arrangements with an Australian couple who live in Bali to raise Stella until the young mother's release.
