Google Considers Move to Merchandise Mart: Report

Google would become the largest tenant in Chicago's largest office building

Google could be moving to the Merchandise Mart.

Sources tell Crain's Chicago Business the California-based company is in advanced lease negotiations with the Mart's owner. But there is still a chance talks could fall through, pushing the company to look at other locations in the city.

Google recently completed a major takeover of Motorola Mobility Holdings Inc., which is based in Libertyville. Reports surfaced in May of Google's plans to shop for more than 500,000 square feet of office space downtown for the mobile-phone company.

The Merchandise Mart would fulfill that, with a reported lease that could exceed 500,000 square feet.

Google plans to move its 3,000 employees downtown if a lease deal is done with the Mart. The tech giant also wants to add a roof deck onto the building, so employees can have amazing views of the Chicago River.

Neither Google nor Motorola Mobility would comment on the Crain's report.
