Google Adds Chicago Art Institute Paintings to Online Gallery

Art Institute, Google, Mayor Emanuel announce project Tuesday

A new way to look at art was unveiled Tuesday with Google introducing an expanded Google Art Project that now includes the Chicago Art Museum.

The project makes art from around the world possible to enjoy with just a click of a mouse. The new section of Google allows you to take a deeper look at over 30,000 pieces of art work from over 150 different museums from around the world.

"Even in the galleries, no one can get that close to a picture so this is like seeing the picture in a loboratory and then seeing it in the gallery," says the President of the Art Institute, Douglas Druick.

The Art Institute, along with many other museums, allowed Google to use their streetview technology to create an online walk through of their galleries. One of the most famous paintings included in the online display is Georges Seurat's "Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte."

"Our complete focus is making art accessible to the world simply and easily and providing a wonderful way for people to engage in and expore art work like never before," says the US president of Google, Margo Giorgiadis.

There is no cost to browse the Google Art Project online galleries.

Google Art Project began last year.
