A Chicago executive rented out the Goodman Theatre so hundreds of students could enjoy a matinee show of “A Christmas Carol” this holiday season.
More than 800 children flooded the venue Thursday to be treated to a live performance of the holiday classic – all thanks to businessman Martin J. Koldyke.
"I’ve been a fan of 'A Christmas Carol’ for a long time," he said. "I love the message. I love the Christmas spirit."
The students gifted with the viewing were part of Koldyke’s Academy for Urban School Leadership, which turns around underperforming schools and aims to help students expand their horizons.
Koldyke founded the AUSL, as well as the Golden Apple Foundation, a non-profit that “works to inspire, develop and support teacher and school leader excellence in Illinois.”
"The experience of watching them watch it together and the knowledge that they’re all experiencing it together is something you can feel in the room," said Director Henry Wishcamper.
