Good Samaritan Beaten by Fleeing Robbers

Victim stopped to help fleeing men after they crashed their getaway car

Two men wanted for an armed robbery in Bradley, Ill., were taken into police custody after they battered and carjacked a Good Samaritan who stopped to help them after an early Saturday rollover on Interstate 57.

The men were fleeing from an armed robbery they just committed when their vehicle rolled over in the northbound lanes of I-57 at 139th Street about 4:30 a.m., Illinois State Police District Chicago Sgt. Mike Karpinski said.

When a Good Samaritan stopped to help, the suspects battered the 37-year-old man and stole his Lexus, Karpinski said.

The stolen Lexus then crashed into a McDonald’s restaurant in Kankakee, where Kankakeee police immediately arrested one of the men. The other man fled and holed himself in a nearby apartment complex, but was later captured by SWAT team members, Karpinski said.

Both suspects were transferred to the Bradley Police Department to be processed for the armed robbery, Karpinski said. Bradley police could not immediately provide further details.

State Police are investigating the accident and carjacking.
