Girl X Needs a New Home

State's Attorney: She's no longer eligible to live in facility

In 1997, we knew her as Girl X. a 9-year-old who was raped, poisoned and dumped in a Cabrini-Green stairwell. Today, Shatoya Currie is 22 and she needs a new home.

Blind, unable to speak and confined to a wheelchair, Currie lives in a state facility, where she is loved but will soon be no longer eligible to live.

"She has reached the age where she can no longer stay at the Illinois Center for Rehabilitation and Education," Cook County State's Attorney Anita Alvarez told the Chicago Sun-Times.  Alvarez prosecuted Currie's attacker, Patrick Sykes, who is serving a life sentence in Pontiac.
