The 7-year-old girl shot while trick-or-treating Halloween on Chicago's West Side has been improving in the hospital, according to Cook County health officials.
Giselle Zamago was one of two people injured in a shooting at approximately 5:30 p.m. on Oct. 31 in the 3700 block of West 26th Street in the city's Little Village neighborhood, according to police. Her condition was upgraded to fair, health officials said in a statement released Monday.
They added Zamago has been resting and watching her favorite TV shows, and her parents are "immensely grateful and overwhelmed by the love and support they have received."
Police arrested a 15-year-old boy on Friday night for attempted murder in the shooting of Zamago and the second victim. The teen was reportedly a member of a gang, and intended to target a rival gang member, prosecutors said at a court hearing on Saturday.
Instead, he allegedly shot the 7-year-old girl who was trick-or-treating with family while wearing a Minnie Mouse costume. Giselle Zamago's aunt, Sanjuana Zamago, told NBC 5 on Saturday that what happened wasn't fair, and her family managed to get through a nightmare.
The young girl's family said they believe she could be in the hospital for up to two weeks.
