Gay Church Employee Fired Over Engagement Speaks With Cardinal George

Collette remains unemployed but says he is still committed to the Catholic Church

When Colin Collette emerged from his meeting with Cardinal Francis George he described it as “spiritual.”

“He was wonderful… in his moment,” Collette said. He was very pastoral in this moment

Collette asked for the meeting with George after he was fired from his position as music director of Holy Family Church in Inverness for announcing his engagement to his longtime partner.

Collette would not offer specifics about his meeting with George, including whether he asked for his job back.

“I can’t talk a lot about that other than to say that the Cardinal and I had a wonderful conversation and a conversation that I hope will continue,” he said.

On Monday, George did answer questions in anticipation of the meeting.

“It was his decision that caused this crisis,” George said. “So I’ll ask him ‘Why did you make this decision knowing what was going to happen, what had to happen?’ And I’ll see what he has to say about that.”

Collette remains unemployed but says he is still committed to the Catholic Church.

“My whole life has been the church,” he said. “It’s my love, it’s my passion and I just pray for the opportunity to be able to continue to do that.”
