Former Indiana Resident Among Those Bracing For Hurricane Dorian's Wrath

The storm is projected to hit Florida on Sunday, and could be a Category 4 hurricane when it does so

As Florida prepares for Hurricane Dorian, a former Indiana resident is among those keeping a wary eye on the skies.

Dorian flooded streets, toppled trees, and capsized boats in the Caribbean this week, and as it prepares to make a likely landfall in Florida, it could do so as a powerful Category 4 hurricane.

“We are doing everything that we possibly can to stay ahead of it, really,” Fort Lauderdale resident Mike Harvey said.

Harvey grew up in Valparaiso, and now lives in Fort Lauderdale with his family. The family has stocked up on all the essentials to get through a storm, including water, gas, and other supplies.

“The looks of everything around town (makes it seem like) everybody’s taking this one very seriously,” he said.

Charities are also taking the potential impact of the storm seriously. The Chicago-area Red Cross has two volunteers already en route to Florida, where they’ll help provide food and shelter for those who are displaced. More volunteers could be activated for help if the storm does serious damage to the region when it makes landfall, which it is expected to do on Sunday.

In the meantime, everyone in the Sunshine State is hoping for the best, while preparing for the worst.

“You just hope and pray that it doesn’t come to you,” Harvey said. “If it does, you pray you have something left when it’s gone.”
