Shawn Prate normally goes fishing with his son at Lindsay Lake in Wauconda several times a week.
However, the father and son team never imagined they would reel in a man instead of fish.
On Thursday, Prate used his fishing pole to save the life of Bruce Brown, 60, of Wauconda, who nearly drowned attempting to save the life of his pet parakeet.
