Teen Critically Wounded in Chicago Area's 1st Expressway Shooting of 2019

A teenager was critically wounded in a shooting on I-290 early Wednesday, marking the first expressway shooting of the year in the Chicago area.

The shooting took place at around 1:09 a.m. on the westbound Eisenhower Expressway at the Wolf Road ramp in suburban Hillside, according to Illinois State Police.

A 17-year-old boy inside a car was shot in the head and the hand, officials said. A female was in the car as well at the time of the shooting, according to ISP, who said she was uninjured.

It appeared as though the female was able to drive the boy to Elmhurst Hospital, where authorities said he was in critical condition.

The car, a blue Buick SUV with its back and side windows shattered, as well as its side punctured with bullet holes, was towed from the hospital with a police escort early Wednesday.

State police shut down several lanes of the expressway overnight, officials said, as investigators gathered shell casings and continued to comb the scene for evidence.

No one was in custody in connection with the shooting, according to ISP, who continued to investigate.
