2-Alarm Fire Breaks Out at Apartment Building on Chicago's North Side

A two-alarm fire broke out at a mid-rise apartment building on Chicago's North Side early Tuesday.

The fire broke out around 5:30 a.m. in the 1700 block of West Touhy Avenue in the Rogers Park neighborhood, officials said.

It was first reported on the rear porches facing Touhy, according to fire officials, but quickly spread to the interior of the building.

Multiple ambulances and fire trucks were called to the scene, and firefighters could be seen battling the blaze from the roof while smoke billowed into the sky.

The fire was struck out around 7:15 a.m., the fire department tweeted.

Authorities said two people were taken to area hospitals, including a 51-year-old woman who jumped from the third floor's front window. She was pronounced dead at St. Francis Hospital, according to fire officials.

The second person taken to an area hospital was a middle-aged woman who suffered smoke inhalation, officials said. She was taken to Weiss Memorial Hospital with injuries that were not thought to be life-threatening, according to the fire department.

Touhy and Clark streets were blocked near their intersection amid the emergency response.

The cause of the fire remained under investigation.
