Fines Kick in Wednesday For NW Side Speed Camera

New speed-enforcement cameras installed near Gompers Park on the Northwest Side will issue their last warnings Wednesday before churning out fines starting at $35.

Starting at 6 a.m., the cameras along Foster Avenue near the park will issue tickets for motorists going 10 or more miles per hour over the posted limit, according to the Chicago Department of Transportation.

All motorists will get one more warning before receiving a ticket and a fine.

The city plans to gradually lower the speeding threshold in the coming weeks, eventually ticketing drivers going 6 miles an hour over the speed limit or more, the release said.

Violators will face a $34 fine for driving between 6 and 10 miles per hour over the posted speed limit, the release said. Drivers speeding by 11 miles per hour or more will receive a $100 ticket.

The speed camera will be in effect when the park at 4222 W. Foster Ave. is open, from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m.

The camera on Foster Avenue also has two speed indicator signs, in hopes that drivers will slow down, the release said.
