The Federal Emergency Management Agency has denied Gov. Pat Quinn's request for federal assistance for nine Illinois county governments impacted by November's tornadoes and severe storms.
The aid would have help recover expenses for things such as extensive police overtime racked up in the aftermath of the storms.
Quinn announced Thursday that the state would appeal the decision, which affects Champaign, Douglas, Grundy, Massac, Tazewell, Vermilion, Washington, Wayne and Woodford counties.
The counties were seeking $6.1 million of aid, and figure that fell below the $17.8 million threshold needed to received federal aid.
Millions of federal dollars in aid have already been approved to help residents and businesses recover.
