Father, Son Charged After Man Dies of Drug Overdose in Beach Park

A father and son have been charged with driving an overdosing man away from their north suburban Beach Park home, where the man had been doing drugs with the son Sunday morning.

Russell Eilrich, 21, of the 700 block of Greenbriar Lane in Schaumburg, was found slumped in a vehicle about 7:10 a.m. near North Wilson Avenue and West Edgewood Road in Beach Park, according to a statement from the Lake County sheriff’s office.

Investigators discovered that Eilrich had previously been about block away, in 21-year-old Mason Spencer’s home in the 37900 block of North Loyola Avenue, police said. Spencer, an acquaintance of Elrich’s, helped him buy illegal drugs, which they did together overnight.

But when Eilrich began to overdose, rather than calling paramedics, Mason Spencer enlisted the help of his 47-year-old father, James Spencer, who lives in the home with him, police said.

Together, the father and son put Eilrich in his vehicle and drove the vehicle to Wilson and Edgewood, police said. Preliminary findings of an autopsy on Monday found a combination of drugs in Eilrich’s system.

The father and son have each been charged with involuntary manslaughter, concealment of a death and obstructing justice, all felonies, police said. They were also charged with one misdemeanor count each of possession of ammunition without a FOID card.

Mason Spencer also faces one felony count of unlawful possession of a controlled substance.

Both men are scheduled to appear in bond court Tuesday in Waukegan.
