Father Shot While Walking to Gas Station in Lincoln Park

The 46-year-old's daughter told NBC 5 that her father is not in a gang and she has “no idea why anyone would want to do this.”

A man was rushed into emergency surgery Thursday morning after being shot in the stomach while walking in Chicago’s Lincoln Park neighborhood.

Richard Castillo was on his way to the gas station and heading westbound on Diversey Avenue near the busy intersection of Clybourn, Diversey and Damen Avenues around 4:20 a.m. when a black Honda from the other side of the road suddenly pulled up next to him, police said.

Someone in the car started then started yelling gang slogans and opened fire, police said. Castillo was hit near the lower back and abdomen, police said.

Castillo’s daughter told NBC 5 that the 46-year-old father of 12, who has been married for 11 years, is not in a gang and she has “no idea why anyone would want to do this.”

Doctors at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center told the family he could be in surgery for several hours.

No one is in custody as police continue to investigate the shooting.
