A man was killed in a Friday night hit-and-run crash on the South Side.

A van fatally struck a 24-year-old man -- identified by the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office as Robert Williams -- as he crossed the street in the 9100 block of South Stony Island Avenue about 9:15 p.m. Friday, police said.

Williams, of the 9100 block of South Dante Avenue, was pronounced dead just after 10 p.m. at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.

The van -- described as a red or burgundy Chevrolet conversion van with a gray stripe across the side panels -- continued northbound after the crash, according to a community alert issued by the police Major Accident Investigation Unit.

The driver is described only as a 20- to 26-year-old black man, police said.

Anyone with information about the van or driver is asked to call the police Major Accident Investigation Unit at 312-745-4521.
