Judge Lets “Fast Eddie” Off Home Confinement

Former Chicago alderman served a 10-month sentence at an Indiana federal prison camp for a $1.5 million real estate kickback scheme

A federal judge on Wednesday ended home imprisonment early for former Chicago alderman Edward Vrdolyak.

U.S. District Judge Matthew Kennelly ruled that Vrdolyak could end his home imprisonment three months early. The judge said instead Vrdolyak must do 300 hours of community service.

Vrdolyak was to serve five months of home confinement.

Vrdolyak served a 10-month sentence at an Indiana federal prison camp for a $1.5 million real estate kickback scheme. He pleaded guilty in 2008 and sentenced to five years of probation. But federal prosecutors appealed and another judge re-sentenced him to 10 months in prison and a $250,000 fine.

Vrdolyak has been out of politics for more than a decade, but has remained prominent in Chicago.
