Family Seeks Donations for Man Left Paralyzed by Carjacking Attempt

The family of a man left paralyzed by a gunshot wound is looking for help in paying for his medical supplies.

Edwin Cruz, who was shot twice during an attempted carjacking  earlier this year, is now wheelchair-bound, and must wear diapers, his family says.

Cruz was driving to work when he was held up at gunpoint in February. Rather than give up the car, Cruz fought back, and was shot twice in the struggle.

One bullet struck Cruz near his heart, and the other one hit him in the neck, leaving him paralyzed.

Now, Cruz’s family and Our Lady of Suyapa in Waukegan are seeking donations to help cover his medical supplies.

“We are making a call out to the people of God,” Julie Contreras of Our Lady of Suyapa said in a statement. “Mr. Cruz is a gunshot victim and he needs our help.”

The family held an event on Sunday at the church, where they sought donations to help Cruz, who does not have health insurance.

“He is a father of two beautiful girls who he can no longer run and play with because these criminals took this away from him,” Cruz’s sister Doris said. “Please help him!”

Donations can be send to the church at:
