Family of Boy Killed In Gary Hit-and-Run Searches for Answers

Police are searching for a dark-colored vehicle – possibly a Buick

The family of a 9-year-old Gary boy who was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver Sunday night while riding his bicycle, is pleading that the driver responsible for the tragic incident come forward.

Markese Jones was struck and killed by a vehicle at around 10 p.m. Sunday while riding his bike near 25th Street and Broadway, police said.

Jones was riding south in the northbound lanes along with other children, when a driver hit him, police said.

"I seen my other grandson screaming," said the grandmother Terlisa Jones. "I parked my car and got out and I seen my grandson."

Tyisha Jones, his older sister said she experienced death for the first time.

"I seen my little brother laying there and I picked him up," she said.

Authorities are looking for a dark-colored vehicle – possibly a Buick – that after fleeing the scene, continued west on I-80/94.

Family members said Jones had recently been taken into foster care.

Indiana Department of Child Services says it can’t comment on the agency’s involvement with a family.

Gary police are asking anyone who witnessed the crash to call the hit-and-run division at 219-881-1209.
