The family of a man who died in police custody will receive a $1.3 million settlement of taxpayer money.
John Coleman, Jr. swallowed several packets of heroin while being chased by police in July 2010, according to the Sun Times. When police caught him, they allegedly beat and tased him before putting him into the back of a police vehicle.
The lawyer for Coleman's family says after he was arrested, the officers drove to the 18th District station slowly while Coleman slumped over in the backseat. The lawyer argued police procedure requires officers to take anyone they tase to a hospital immediately.
Video from inside the police SUV shows what happened between the time officers arrested Coleman and when they arrived at the police station, and that, according to First Deputy Corporation Counsel Leslie Darling, is the biggest reason why the case was settled.
Five officers were involved in the arrest of Coleman. Two were relieved of their police powers.
