Families of Crash Victims Say Cop Getting Special Treatment

Terrell Garrett charged with DUI, reckless homicide following Friday crash

The families of the two men killed in the fatal three-vehicle crash last week say the case against an accused officer hasn't been managed property.

"It's not right that he's a cop and he has special treatment. They are officers, they have power they should not abuse it," said Cecilia Garcia, the mother of Joaquin Garcia, who was killed in the crash.

Terrell Garrett, a North Chicago police officer, is being held on $500,000 bail after being charged with two counts of aggravated driving under the influence and two counts of reckless homicide.
If Garrett posts bond, he would not be allowed to consume alcohol or possess a firearm and would be required to wear an electronic monitor.

But the families of Garcia and Fabian Torres said Garrett's bail was set too low and that he's receiving preferential treatment due to his affiliation with the police department.

Garrett was in an SUV that crashed into a Jeep and a Toyota Scion at about 4 a.m. in the southbound lanes at Diversey Parkway. Police said he likely got onto Lake Shore Drive at LaSalle Drive. Witnesses said he was traveling at speeds of 60 miles per hour or more.

Garrett reportedly had a blood alcohol content of more than double the legal limit. He was arrested and immediately placed on administrative leave.
