Fake McDonald's Ad Prank Turns Viral, Highlights Asian Representation

“They had other races but no Asians so we felt like it was our duty to put ourselves up there,” expressed Maravilla

A prank at a McDonald’s in Texas is going viral after a couple of friends decided it was time to add some diversity to the restaurant’s walls.

University of Texas student Jevh Maravilla and his friend Christian Toledo, took a photo of themselves posing with a McDonald’s burger and fries in their hands—with the idea that they would then print it out as a giant poster.

“We were eating McDonald’s one day and we looked around and saw there were posters around that didn’t have any Asians,” Maravilla explained to our NBC-affiliate KSDK in Missouri.

According to KSDK, Maravilla found an old McDonald’s shirt for $7 at a Goodwill and dressed up as an employee. Once the logo was added and with the help of some friends, on July 13, they said they snuck the poster inside the restaurant without the staff noticing.

“They had other races but no Asians so we felt like it was our duty to put ourselves up there,” expressed Maravilla.

On Sunday night Maravilla tweeted about the prank and within the span of 24 hours, KSDK reports, it had gone viral with more than 100,000 retweets and 400,000 likes.

“I noticed there was a blank wall at McDonald’s so I decided to make this fake poster of me and my friend. It’s now been 51 days since I hung it up,” states Maravilla in a tweet.

As of Tuesday afternoon, the tweet has more than 200,000 retweets and 800,000 likes.

NBC Chicago reached out to McDonald's for a comment.

“We take pride in highlighting diversity in every aspect of our restaurants. We applaud these students’ creativity and hope to see them in our restaurants again soon,” stated spokesperson Mariselle Quijano in an email.
