Teacher Talks Resume in Evergreen Park

UPDATE: Talks End; Teachers Ask for Mediator

Union members representing Evergreen Park teachers were back at the negotiating table with district officials Wednesday afternoon, and there were renewed hopes that an agreement was in reach.

By 11 p.m., officials from both sides were seen going out for snacks. One negotiator expected talks to continue into the early morning hours.

Talks broke down Monday, sparking a teacher strike. Students have been out of school for two days while educators walked the picket line.

"The last proposal that they put on the table was unacceptable, so we have to get to a point where we can reach something that's a compromise that can end this strike," said Dave Comerford with the Evergreen Park Federation of Teachers Local 943.

Two of the major issues on the table include compensation and health insurance. Both sides have been meeting weekly since April.

More than 1,800 students are affected by the work stoppage.
