The north suburb earned its best marks in things to do, average commute time, education and community

One Chicago suburb has been named one of the best towns in the country.

North suburban Evanston, home of Northwestern University, landed the No. 19 spot on the Niche.com list as part of the "2015 Niche Rankings."

The towns were ranked based on a range of criteria, from how much there is to do to job opportunities and crime. Evanston received its highest grades in things to do, average commute time, education and community -- all A+ grades.

The suburb got its lowest marks in job opportunities (B-), crime and safety (C+) and weather (C+).

California appeared to dominate the ranking with seven of the top 10 spots. Palo Alto took the No. 1 spot, followed by Park City in Utah, Redmond in Washington, Mountain View in California and Santa Monica in California.

Five other Illinois towns grabbed spots in the top 100, although none fared as well as Evanston. Schaumburg came in at No. 37, Skokie at No. 49, Arlington Heights at No. 60, Hoffman Estates at No. 79 and Des Plaines at No. 85.
