Heavy Police Presence in Elmhurst Started as Traffic Stop Before Driver Fled: Cops

Authorities were searching for a driver who fled a traffic stop in west suburban Elmhurst Tuesday night after a tight-lipped investigation and a large police response that closed streets in the area.

A city official confirmed to NBC police were “investigating an incident” that occurred at York Road and Crestview Avenue about 4:45 p.m. Police Chief Michael Ruth later revealed police had stopped a driver who then fled the area. The driver's vehicle was found in Chicago but remained at large late Tuesday night.

The incident is under investigation by the Elmhurst Police Department, DuPage Major Crimes Task Force and the DuPage County States Attorney’s Office.

Northbound lanes were closed on York Road at Lake Street and southbound at Grand Avenue.

Drivers were asked to avoid the area.

No other details were immediately available.
