Elgin Police Deputy Chief Bill Wolf said the boy and his 13-year-old brother were crossing Route 20 near McLean Boulevard at about 6:15 p.m. The driver of a vehicle heading eastbound told police he tried to avoid the teen but struck the younger boy.
The victim was taken to Presence St. Joseph Hospital where he later died.
Wolf said no citations had been issued as of 6 a.m. Thursday. He called the incident an accident.
The police chief said the boys lived in an apartment complex near the accident scene.
The driver of the vehicle was not injured.
Anyone with information about the crash should call the Elgin Police Department Traffic Unit at 847-289-2661.
