East Chicago Mayor Guilty of Conspiracy, Theft

Mayor George Pabey used city money for home improvements, jury finds

A jury on Friday found East Chicago Mayor George Pabey guilty of conspiracy and theft of city funds for having city employees work on a private home Pabey owns in Gary with his daughter.

His co-defendant, former engineering department supervisor Jose Camacho was found guilty on two counts of conspiracy and theft, but was acquitted on two counts of witness tampering, the Northwest Indiana Times reported.  They were charged in a grand jury indictment earlier this year.

The pair face sentences of up to 15 years in prison. Both were released on their previously posted bond until sentencing.

Pabey's attorney, Scott King, said his client was disappointed and planned to appeal the conviction.
