Some holiday treats are leaving a bad taste in the mouths of several dozen people.
The Illinois Department of Public Health linked four recent outbreaks of foodborne illnesses to dessert items from Rolf's Patisserie in Lincolnwood.
Around 100 people reported becoming ill after consuming Rolf's desserts at a a company event, catered party, a restaurant and holiday party, according to the IDPH.
Rolf’s, a wholesale and retail sales bakery, is closed temporarily while the outbreaks are investigated. The company voluntarily recalled all products made after Nov. 1, and is contacting retailers and restaurants to remove the products from shelves.
Lab tests show at least one of the contaminated desserts containing high levels of Staphylococcus aureus (staph infection), which is caused when a person with a staph infection has an uncovered lesion or sore that comes in contact with food or food processing equipment.
Infected persons experience symptoms ranging from nausea and vomiting to stomach crampsand diarrhea, but the illness is considered mild, with recovery time typically coming after one to three days.
