Boy, 3, Killed in Apartment Fire

Boy, his grandmother found in upper hallway of building, fire crew say

A fire at an apartment building on Chicago's South Side has claimed the life of a 3-year-old boy.

Deavion Arnold and his 74-year-old grandmother were laying in the hallway on the second floor of the building, in the 7000 block of South Dorchester Avenue when crews arrived, fire officials said.

The boy was taken to University of  Chicago Comer Children's hospital, where he was pronounced dead.  His grandmother was listed in critical condition at the University of Chicago Hospitals.  Both were overcome with smoke, officials said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.  Crews are looking into whether smoke detectors existed and if they were working.
