Dolton Police Continue to Search for 2 Suspects in Robbery, Shootout

Police continued to search Tuesday for two suspects in a robbery that resulted in a "gun battle" with police and subsequent manhunt in south suburban Dolton.

The incident started at around 1 p.m. Monday when officers were called to a used car dealership, located in the 500 block of East Sibley Blvd, for reports of an armed robbery in progress, according to Dolton Mayor Riley Rogers.

Authorities said two suspects took a wallet and gun from the manager of the dealership before exiting the building, where they encountered a Dolton police officer and engaged in a shootout. Witnesses reported hearing as many as 26 shots.

One of the suspects was shot in the thigh and taken to the University of Chicago Hospital in critical condition, according to police. Officials said Tuesday identified him only as a 19-year-old man and said he was not cooperating with police in their investigation.

A veteran Dolton officer dislocated his shoulder while taking cover, according to police. That officer, who has been on the force for more than 20 years, was taken to an area hospital for treatment and remained hospitalized as of Tuesday morning, authorities said.

Officials said two other suspects - one believed to have participated in the robbery and the other thought to be a getaway driver - escaped police following the shootout.

Authorities initiated a massive manhunt, with Rogers asking that area residents stay inside their homes and remain vigilant as police search for the suspects.

K-9 units found a hoodie and facemask while searching the area, according to police, who said a weapon was also recovered at the scene.

No description was given of the suspects as authorities continued to search into Tuesday morning.

Multiple law enforcement agencies including the Illinois State Police, the Cook County Sheriff's Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms were involved in the investigation, officials said.
