Six people were inside a van that crashed through a guard rail and into the Little Calumet River early Thursday morning.
Two people were taken to Christ Advocate Hospital. One was released around midday day, and there was word the other may have been on track to be released by Thursday evening. Four people walked away with no injuries.
The crash occurred at about 3 a.m. near 147th Street and Wentworth Ave in south suburban Dolton.
Dolton Police Chief Jerry McCullough said it wasn't a pursuit. The driver may have fell asleep at the wheel and veered off.
"When they went up over the concrete barrier they went right into the water and believe it or not they didn't go far. They were in shallow water," he said.
The depth of the water was only three feet, but the current was swift. A friend of one of the victims, Eddie London, said he couldn't believe it.
"On the news they were saying Calumet River. So you kind of think that it's deep waters, but it's kind of shallow right there. You can tell that it was a blessing that it wasn't deep water and everyone did make it out safely."
Police are still investigating as to how the van plunged over the barrier.
