Dog Lost in Chicago River Found

Tank, a yellow Pomeranian, slipped off a boat Sunday night

A Pomeranian that slipped off a boat Sunday evening on the North Branch of the Chicago River has been found.

Tank, a yellow Pomeranian, was spotted Monday night on the 4900 block of North Kedzie Avenue after he went missing around 6:30 p.m. the day before near Goose Island.

The 5-year-old dog's owners, Linn and Mark Lewis of St. Charles, searched for hours, working with Chicago Police and the U.S. Coast Guard to try and find the missing dog.

The couple had been boating in Lake Michigan Sunday for the Memorial Day holiday and entered the Chicago River around 6 p.m. Tank usually is tethered in the boat, but for some reason Mark Lewis said he forgot to attach it.

"Obviously my job as captain is to make sure everyone's safe, and I failed him," he said earlier Monday. "I am heartbroken."

Tank was wearing a yellow life vest with the word "Gladiator" written on the side.

"We always take him," said Linn Lewis, noting the dog knows how to swim. "He loves to go boating, we’ve taken him boating for years."

Tank apparently swam to shore and was found in a park. The couple offered a $500 reward but said the woman who found Tank wouldn't accept the money.
